The problem is where is Ashlan? The last time he saw in the BDSM club she was covered in angry bruises. What happened while he was gone? Who is hurting her? How did he fail in protecting her, his Sub?
This book deals with some very serious subjects, alcoholism, sexual kink, vandalism, attempted murder by a couple different people. Drugs, abuse, adultry. This book has it all. It is full of action from start to finish. This book is the second in the Betrayed by Love series and it could totally be a stand alone as you don't really miss anything. The first book is from Izzy and Alec's point of view and the second book is Spencer and Ashlans point of views.
Very well written and keeps you on the edge of your seat. HD Kelley is a great author and I look forward to seeing what happens in book 3.

Shattered Dreams is the second book in the Betrayed by Love series by H. D. Kelley. In theory it could be read as a standalone because it doesn’t carry on from book 1 but it does include the ending to it as the books intertwine at certain points so I would definitely recommend reading them in order.
Shattered Dreams is Spencer’s story and actually time wise it starts well before Izzy’s story in book 1. In book 1 we find out that Spencer has cheated on Izzy after 19 years of marriage and I have to admit I really didn’t like him very much at all but we were only reading about him from Izzy’s point of view and I have to say that reading from his point of view in this book has made me warm to him slightly. I think we definitely see a different side to him in this book. I feel that in Spencer’s mind he doesn’t see what he has done as cheating. He is a Dom at a BDSM club called Esoteric – he recognises that whilst he liked to sexually dominate woman his wife, Izzy, was not into that lifestyle so he thought he was protecting her by going to a club to satisfy his need to dominate. Esoteric is where Spencer meets Ashlan and one thing he didn’t plan on doing was falling in love with his submissive. Ashlan is at the club to try and escape a lifetime of physical abuse. Her husband is a dangerous man and would kill her if he found out about her visits to Esoteric. One day Ashlan accidentally reveals her abuse to Master Spence and like a good Dom does, she knows he will want to help and protect her so fearing for his life (and her own) she has no choice but to run.
As mentioned before I think going into this book I expected to hate Spencer even more, yes he cheated but there was an element of guilt there, he knew what he was doing was wrong but I think he really did still love Izzy. In book 1 he is portrayed as an alcoholic but I think in this book we see that he turns to alcohol as a coping mechanism for how his life has turned out.
I really liked Ashlan – she used the club for a different reason to Spencer. For her it was an escape from painful physical abuse and whilst she craved the pain she received from Master Spence and his whip I think there was also the other aspects of a Dom/sub relationship that she wanted – the caring and protectiveness of her Dom.
I really enjoyed the book and I cannot wait for book 3 – I really want to see Val get what she deserves!!
I give 5 stars to Shattered Dreams.

Spencer James would not call himself a hero by any means. He cheated on his wife, and betrayed his family with his infidelity. However, when Spencer spent time at the BDSM club, Esoteric, where he was a member, he hadn’t really seen what he was doing as cheating. At the club, Spencer was fulfilling his need to dominate women sexually. He was protecting Izzy, his wife, and wanted to make sure that he did not hurt her. He felt that he had already taken her innocence, he did not want to cause her anymore pain, sexual or otherwise.
It was in Spencer’s nature to be a Dom. He loved every minute of dominating his submissive and taking care of her after one of their scenes. The one thing Spencer anticipated was to fall in love with his submissive, Ashlan.
A lifetime of physical abuse led Ashlan to the club, Esoteric. She craved to be dominated knowing that even though she was being dominated; she was the one that was in control. Ashlan had a secret though. If her husband ever found out about this extracurricular activity, he would not only kill her, but her Dom, Spencer, as well.
One day Spencer sees her bruises, which he knows he did not put there. In the heat of the moment when they were arguing, she let it slip that she was abused. She knew that Spencer would do anything to protect his submissive and would most likely get himself killed. She couldn’t let that happen. She is willing to do anything to make sure she protects Spencer. So she does the only thing she can think of to do…she runs.
This story, from start to finish, had me at the edge of my seat. The chemistry between Spencer and Ashlan was so intense. It just jumped out from the pages. In all honesty I wanted to hate Spencer because he cheated on Izzy. However, once I read his story, I realized he may have gone about things wrong, but he truly found his purpose and soul mate in Ashlan. This just serves as a reminder that we find love sometimes in the most unlikely places. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
